Fellowship of the Society

A fellowship of the Society is the highest honour that the Society can bestow on any of its members.

The Memorandum of Association of the Society of Model Aeronautical Engineers Limited contains the following as a definition of Fellowship and its award procedure:

Fellows of the Society  - Persons who, in the opinion of a two-thirds majority of an Annual General Meeting, have performed outstanding service to the Society. Fellowship of the Society carried life membership, which can only be rescinded by a two-thirds majority vote at an Annual General Meeting. Fellows are to be elected at the Annual General Meeting on the recommendation of the Council. Not more than two Fellows may be elected in any one year.

The official BMFA awards procedure booklet says:

Fellowship of the Society of Model Aeronautical Engineers (FSMAE)
May be awarded to a long standing member who over many years has served the Association with distinction and selfless loyalty. Not more that two persons per year may be elected to Fellowship. Election to Fellowship is by the AGM, on the recommendation of Council.’

It’s a common misconception that Fellowship may be awarded to anyone involved in model flying but it’s clear from the above that it may only be awarded to those working within the Society.

Nominations are considered every year but those involved in the deliberations are aware that this is the highest honour that can be awarded within the Society and you will see from the Honours List below that the award is not made every year.

Those awarded a Fellowship are entitled to add the letters FSMAE after their name.
