Meetings and Minutes

The Scale flightline at the Nationals will not be the same this year, as John Miller will not be sitting in the judge’s chair. Very sadly, and unexpectedley, John died in July after a short illness. He was a lifelong aeromodeller, and for many years now a highly respected judge at Scale RC events. He was also on the FAI International judges list, and judged F4B Scale CL at two International Championships. Unlike some judges, John was prepared to put his own reputation on the line and enter events himself. He was fully intending to enter the Flying Only class at this years Nationals, and had a new model ready to go. He was an Area Chief Examiner for many years, and was in fact in at the start of the Achievement Scheme, being one of the first examiners to be appointed. Among his other talents, John was a very good jazz clarinetist. John will be greatly missed by his many friends. We all send our condolences to his wife Jenny and his three children from his first marriage.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Reg Bench the BMFA Honorary Solicitor.

Reg (69) had been an avid aeromodeller from an early age and died suddenly on the 8th of August whilst flying at his club – The Sussex Radio Flying Club.

Reg started his working life as an engineering apprentice with the Rootes Motor Group which later became Humber. Reg re-trained as a solicitor and worked for a number of years for British Caledonian Airways, until they were taken over by British Airways. Reg then worked for Dragonair during which time he was based in Hong Kong for 6 years.

Following this, Reg worked for several legal practices (usually specialising in Marine & Aviation Law) before setting up his own partnership.

During the late 1990′s, Reg was instrumental in producing the national agreement between the National Trust and the BMFA which remains in place to this date. In the intervening years, Reg continued to provide invaluable legal advice as the BMFA Honorary Solicitor and was made an Honorary Member of the BMFA in 2003.

Reg was always in attendance at the AGM & Dinner as well as the Nationals which he always enjoyed (especially the evening activities). He had been very much looking forward to attending the Nationals at the end of this month. Reg was a true gentleman, liked and respected by all who knew him. He was always the life and soul of any party and will be greatly missed.

We offer our sincere condolences to his wife Suzanne and his children Louisa, Daniel, Matthew and Jessica.
